Capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is not a very big city (just over 200 km2), but has everything to please everyone from young backpackers to families.
The residents of Amsterdam speak Dutch, but many can speak perfect English. Like most European countries, the currency used is the Euro.
The architecture of Amsterdam, where modern buildings sit alongside more conventional constructions, makes this a very pleasant city to visit. Apart from its many parks, museums and numerous attractions, you will take great pleasure in wandering through the city from your youth hostel.
Its average size also makes it fairly easy to visit. You can quickly browse through the old town and the adjoining Red Light District, then go to the museum district, further south.
With no coastline, Amsterdam is a city ideal for traveling by bike. If you get to go there in a car, you’ll soon want to leave your car at the parking lot for the duration of your stay.
Half of the inhabitants of Amsterdam ride bikes. You can rent your own in various parts of the city. Make sure you follow the rules of the road and watch for the many pedestrians, and beware, trams have priority!
There is also a neighbourhood with no cars, named the GWL ground, near the city center.
If you need to travel long distances or if you’re just tired, the transit network is very efficient. There are several tram lines crossing the city, not counting the bus and the subway line. These three modes of transport being managed by the same company (GVB) offers a ticket that can be used for any combination.
The cheapest way to travel and enjoy the attractions of the city is to get an Amsterdam I Pass. It is available for stays of 1, 2 or 3 days, and offers not only unlimited access to public transport, but also for free entry to thirty museums, plus 50 special offers, such as a riverboat ride. It costs between 38-58 Euros depending on the duration. This card is purchased online, at tourist offices, the airport and railway stations.
